Bartolo Colon will try and snap a five start winless streak tonight as the Los Angeles Angels host the Oakland Athletics. Colon is 6-5 with a 6.38 ERA this season. He was great early in the year going 5-0 but is a sickening 1-5 with an 8.67 ERA over his last nine outings. "I think eventually (my ERA) will come down," Colon said, "I don't base my confidence on what my ERA is, but I know if I'm allowing too many runs, I'm getting the team behind." 

 

Colon allowed three runs and five hits in five innings of his last start against Tampa Bay.  He is 6-3 with a 3.38 ERA in 13 career starts versus Oakland. The Angels won on Sunday against Minnesota and increased their lead over Seattle in the American League West to two games. The A’s continue to freefall right out of the race in the American League West.  Usually the Athletics are a great second half team but it has not happened so far this year.  They were shut out 2-0 on Sunday by Baltimore.  The A’s have dropped 11 of their last 13 games, batting .178 and averaging 2.4 runs per game in that span.  They are 11 1/2 games out of first place.  This is really the last chance for the A’s to stay remotely in the race as they open a 7 game road trip against Los Angeles and Seattle. "Wins are important at this point, for sure," A's manager Bob Geren said, "We've always played the Angels and Mariners tough, and I expect the same. We just have to try and play good baseball."

Chad Gaudin (8-5, 3.39) goes for Oakland on Monday.  He has been solid all season.  He has not pitched as well of late though giving up 10 runs and 11 walks in 10 innings to lose his last two starts.  He is 1-0 in two starts against the Angels this season, allowing three runs while walking only two batters over 12 2-3 innings.  Oakland has won 4 of 6 this season against Los Angeles.
